Linux projects I really want

Jul 22, 08:44 AM

For several weeks I have been using Ubuntu distribution and so far love the experience. Some complains are on some packages which don’t provide what are needed.

Those three are:

  • ntfs-3g, yeah I need full access to my NTFS partition for smoothly coverting to Linux. I’m Windows-er for a quite long time, so lack of NTFS support always give me reason to boot in Windows.
  • XGL + Compiz…. It’s cool, I’ve try it and it eventually better than OS/X, but unfortunately still buggy and my graphics card seems to have unsolvable bug. Aaaaargh… (Want to see some video? find them on Google Video, keyword: XGL Compiz)
  • InitNG… Faster is always good.

And there are several projects which is not available yet

  • better messenger… please GAIM doesn’t support voice or video chat. And the interface is so ugly compared to Yahoo Messenger
  • fineprint like application, to control my printer. Print 2-4-8-16 pages in one page. I know Linux has some console command for this. But I’m Windows converter. I deserve better interface for this!

And my complains:

  • Totem… OMG.. why you always crash if I’m playing movie in until end in Full Screen mode??? Until I found Ctrl+Alt+D to get out from the black screen I’ve to restart my Ubuntu everytime I watch movie!

Anything to add?

    1. GNOME (and CUPS) has an interface supporting N-up printing for a long time now. At least in Ubuntu, it has worked for me for the past couple years.

I find totem-xine backend much better than the gstreamer one. I almost never have any problems with that.

    1. NTFS-3f is pretty new technology. Pray that it’ll be on Edgy,
XGL and Compiz are actively developed. They’ll get better.
InitNG, I think this one is already planned for Edgy.

GAIM, despite the lack of video and audio support it does have better interface compared to the hideous YM. Truly, I would even use GAIM on Windows instead of YM. Loosing the ‘Buzz’ sound is a blessing. If you want a ‘slightly’ better interface try GAIM 2.0.0 beta.

I don’t know about any crashes on Totem. I’ve used Totem for months with little disappointment. Maybe it relates to the movie type you’re playing. Are you using totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? Totem-xine is sometimes better.

    1. #1 interface supporting N-up printing in GNOME? How can I do that? I search on ubuntuforums and all that people can say is mpage which is console based and gtklp which has some GUI but can’t be integrated with the application (as non-printer printer driver?) Or it can? How to do that?
I try totem xine, and the problem is the subtitle is not proportionally bigger when I change to full screen mode. Do you have the same problem?

      #2 yeah.. I use GAIM 2.0 beta.

    1. 2 or 4 up: Print -> Paper -> Layout.

Subtitles with totem-xine can be configured from ~/.gnome2/totem_config and the format is pretty much the same as ~/.xine/config.
